The Sheboygan County Planning and
Resources Department is looking for interested individuals to participate on
a number of sub-committees to work on items related to the Trail’s
development and work with the Sheboygan County Interurban Recreation Trail
Advisory Committee.
The Advisory Committee has been
meeting for the last few months and will help drive the development of a
recreation trail along the corridor of the former Interurban Rail line from
the Sheboygan-Ozaukee County line at County Road K through Cedar Grove and
ending in Oostburg. The hope is that someday this trail will connect to the
City of Sheboygan, likely via a marked trail along existing public roads.
Development of this recreation
trail will complete the final segment of a regional recreation trail in the
former Inter-Urban Rail corridor currently owned by Wisconsin Energies
Corporation. Presently, the trail crosses portions of Milwaukee and Ozaukee
Counties, going through such communities as Milwaukee, Brown Deer, Mequon,
Thiensville, Cedarburg, Grafton, and Port Washington.
The sub-committees will provide
input and assist County Planning staff & the Interurban Trail Advisory
Committee with trail development and promotion. Members of the group can
expect to meet monthly for the first year. The sub-committees may be
re-structured or dissolved once the trail is complete based on need.
Sub-Committees are as follows:
Natural Resources
(Invasive species control, Native species
re-introduction, Interpretive opportunities)
Donations
(Facilitate fundraising activities)
Trailside Facilities
(Develop a facilities placement plan including
benches, waste facilities, restrooms, water, kiosks, signs for
wayfinding & parking; facilitate the construction and placement of
trail facilities)
Trail Use Surveys
(Including surveys of the number and type of
users on the trail at various times, an intensive count and
interview process of trail users in regard to types of use,
frequency of use, time of use, purpose of use, coordinate an
economic impact survey)
Trail Maintenance
(Identifying maintenance issues such as trail
sweeping, shrub and tree pruning for trail clearance, pick-up and
disposal of recycling and garbage such as bottles, cans, etc.)
Inter-Governmental Cooperation
(Facilitate cooperation amongst the various
public entities- DNR, Sheboygan County, Town of Wilson, Town of
Holland, Village of Oostburg, Village of Cedar Grove)
Public Relations/Promotion
(Promote the Trail, assist with landowner
relations)
Historical/Cultural Resources Committee
(Responsible for researching and
promoting the history of the Interurban rail line)
Meeting days/times will depend upon the
interest/availability of those expressing interest in membership.
